Which treatment is best for my PH?

Your doctor will use his/her knowledge and expertise to assess your PH, and to find the best treatment for your PH. Treatment of PH is often complicated, and requires careful, regular follow-up care and assessment. During treatment of your PH, your doctor may need to change a medication because it is no longer working.

Only you and your doctor can decide together which PH treatment is best for you.

The best treatment for your PH could be surgery or a medication. In some patients with PH, no treatment may be required.

The best approach to treating your PH will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The cause of your PH;
  • The severity of your PH;
  • Your age;
  • Your overall health;
  • The presence of other medical conditions;
  • Whether you take other medications for other conditions;
  • Allergy or intolerance of certain medications.

In some patients with PH, the cause of PH may be known.

  • This may include a condition of the heart (such as heart failure) or a condition of the lungs (such as emphysema).
  • Your doctor will often try to treat this medical condition.
  • In some PH patients, treating another medical condition may also improve the PH.
