Are there medications to treat PH?

Yes, there are medications to treat PH.

In the past, there were no treatments available for PH, and most patients with PH did not live very long.

However, over the past 15 years, based on tremendous research, many new, effective, and safe treatments are now available to treat patients with PH.

Many other, new, experimental medications for PH are also being developed and tested in patients with PH.

Medications to treat PH can be very effective in many patients. PH medication can:

  • Reduce the pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR);
  • Help the right ventricle (RV) of the heart work better;

If you are treated with PH medication, you may:

  • feel better;
  • have less symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, tiredness, edema, faintness, and chest pain;
  • be able to be more active physically, and to exercise;
  • live longer.

Whether or not you will be treated with a medication targeted for PH depends very much on the type of PH you have been diagnosed with. There are many types of PH where these medications are either not helpful, or potentially harmful and your doctor will discuss with you the best treatment individualized for you.
